With strong performances over two days and a dozen competitors, eighth-graders Dory N.and Bilal C. finished first and second respectively in Lancaster Country Day School’s Middle School Spelling Bee. With their top performances, both Dory and Bilal advance to the semifinals of the 59th LNP Spelling Bee, working toward a spot in the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28 in Washington, D.C.
The semis consist of a 100-word written test. Those sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who prevail move on to the finals, where the best spellers in Lancaster County will spell their hearts out for a spot on the big stage, Friday, March 10, at Conestoga Valley Middle School. In the final round at Country Day Feb. 3, Bilal stumbled over “silhouetted,” forgetting the first “e,” while Dory sealed the deal by nailing “Jacobean.”
