Within the next month, the athletics and academic opportunities available to the Lancaster Country Day community and beyond will expand in myriad ways, some of which we’ve long envisioned and countless more that we’ll discover going forward.
The new Physical Education & Athletics Center will include a fitness center with a full complement of strength-training and cardio equipment; a wellness space with a dance and yoga studio, and an early childhood phys ed area; five regulation squash courts; two new locker rooms each for students and adults as well as a sports medicine and training room; and a concession area that will serve the athletics space as well as a new theater to be built in the future.
Country Day has always placed a premium on physical fitness, believing fit minds and fit bodies necessary to the balanced whole. In less lofty terms, having ready access to such a versatile and well-appointed facility will make it easier for students, faculty, staff and parents to exercise and be healthy.
In addition to the general benefits the aforementioned amenities will provide, there are other, specific bonuses that deserve special mention.
— Forming community relationships, especially through rental of the squash courts and dance studio space.
— Hosting interscholastic and collegiate squash tournaments as the third venue in Lancaster with regulation courts.
— Hosting multischool athletics tournaments that would have been beyond the capacity of our old facilities.
— Phys ed teachers will add squash and fitness units to the Lower, Middle and Upper School curriculum.
— The Middle School First LEGO League Robotics Team will be able to host large robotics competitions.
— Dance classes for preschool and junior kindergarten students.
— Space for a Middle School Science Fair open to the broader community.
